Excelsior
began as Stephen Philips' experimentation with multi-layered
ambient techno and trance. Initially heavily influence by the
Orb, FSOL, and Autechre, and Aphex Twin, then later Richie Hawtin,
Boards of Canada, Biosphere, and others, Excelsior has evolved
into a living breathing cosmic entity.
Excelsior continues to amaze with their unique
brand of ambient/ trance/ techno/ breakbeat. Their music continues
to span many different styles. Spherical Realms featured mostly
ambient techno stuff while the Sky Harbor features an even broader
range of styles and influences. It goes from straight ahead techno
to ambient to breakbeat and back again. Their singles feature
experimental techno and house mixes and the Impulse EP is an
outstanding exercise in very hard trance. Excelsior's Level 3
features minimal ambient techno. Sounds like Richie Hawtin aka
Plastikman meets Boards of Canada meets Spyra. Structured Resistance
features ambient IDM in the Boards of Canada meets Lackluster
meets Aphelion style. Excelsior continues to explore new territory.
Their next release (their 5th full-length CD) will likely be
released in spring 2002.
